  • Intake headcount grows with volume
Why it pays · by sector and role

What the report is worth to your sector and your role.

The report prices the labour in every document for five sectors, using each sector's reference role, and shows where to start. Figures below are taken from the report (chapters 11–16).

SectorReference roleLoaded cost an hourAnnual value, before software costWhere to start
Financial services & insuranceClaims clerk$36.3$291,000Claims intake classification, ID checks, statement tables; keep decisions human
Logistics, freight & tradeFreight agent$39.3$315,000Cross-document checks and freight invoice audit, electronic documents first
Construction & real estateBookkeeping clerk$36.8$294,000Pay applications against the schedule of values, insurance certificate and waiver expiry, lease registers
HealthcareMedical records specialist$39.0$312,000Completeness at intake, appeal packs, remittance matching
Professional servicesParalegal$47.9$383,000Contract registers, client onboarding, receipts and expenses

Market research model · based on published benchmarks. Reference role = the occupation the report uses to price each sector's document work. Loaded cost an hour = mean US wage (BLS OEWS, May 2025) divided by the wage share of total compensation (BLS ECEC, 70%). Annual value = 10,000 documents a month moving from 30% to 70% straight-through at 10 handling minutes a document, which frees about 3.8 FTE (8,000 hours a year); hours freed are priced at the loaded rate and become cash only if redeployed or not hired. The where-to-start column is NEWMIND analysis, not a measured outcome.

For the CFO: cost you can take to the budget

  • Ten minutes of keying costs about $4.96 in loaded labour; machine reading of a 3-page document costs $0.0045 at list price
  • At a 30% straight-through rate, human review is 92% of the automated cost per document: every ten points of straight-through is worth more than any list-price difference
  • Value at three volumes: 0.8 FTE ($58,100) at 2,000 claims documents a month, 3.8 FTE ($291,000) at 10,000, 19.2 FTE ($1.45 million) at 50,000
  • Reference grids of yearly handling cost by role and automated cost per document
  • A business case worksheet and build-or-buy guidance

For the COO: productivity you can run

  • Straight-through rate as the lever to run, and how to measure it on your own documents
  • Six document-type playbooks and a field schema to write before any tool is chosen
  • Baseline time study, exception log and weekly accuracy sample to run the floor
  • Tool bake-off scorecard and vendor questions for the selection
  • A first-90-days plan, a twelve-month roadmap and a KPI tracker
